Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) was the twenty-sixth president of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909 after the assassination of William McKinley made him, at 42, the youngest person ever to hold the office. He pursued an active antitrust policy, using the Sherman Act to break up railroad and other industrial combinations, and championed the conservation of natural resources, establishing numerous national parks, forests, and monuments. His administration also oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War.
