19th President of the United States, Republican

Rutherford B. Hayes

Term: Mar 4, 1877 – Mar 4, 1881

Rutherford B. Hayes (1822–1893) was the nineteenth president of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. He took office following the disputed 1876 presidential election, in which the outcome was resolved by the Compromise of 1877 — an arrangement that awarded Hayes the presidency while withdrawing the remaining federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction and leaving formerly enslaved people without federal protection of their civil rights. His administration pursued civil service reform and sought reconciliation between North and South, though the withdrawal of troops allowed the suppression of Black political participation across the former Confederate states.
