John Tyler

John Tyler (1790–1862) was the tenth president of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845 after the death of William Henry Harrison — the first vice president to assume the presidency this way. His insistence on full presidential authority rather than a caretaker role prompted his own Whig Party to expel him, leaving him without a party for most of his term. He signed the joint resolution annexing the Republic of Texas in his final days in office. After leaving the presidency Tyler sided with the Confederacy and was elected to the Confederate Congress, making him the only U.S. president to die as an enemy of the United States government.
