James Monroe

James Monroe (1758–1831) was the fifth president of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825, during a period often called the "Era of Good Feelings." He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine (1823), which declared the Western Hemisphere off-limits to further European colonization — a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy for generations. Monroe was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War and had served as a senator, governor of Virginia, and Secretary of State.
