James A. Garfield (1831–1881) was the twentieth president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death on September 19, 1881. He was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881 at a Washington, D.C. train station and survived for nearly eleven weeks before dying from his wounds and from infections introduced by his doctors' repeated probing of the wound. Before the presidency he had served as a Union general in the Civil War and as a congressman from Ohio for nearly two decades.
