Harry S. Truman (1884–1972) was the thirty-third president of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. He succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt upon Roosevelt's death in April 1945 and led the country through the final months of World War II, including the decision to use atomic bombs against Japan in August 1945. His presidency saw the beginning of the Cold War, the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, the creation of NATO, the recognition of Israel, and U.S. involvement in the Korean War. He won the 1948 presidential election in an upset widely expected by commentators to go to Republican Thomas Dewey.
