Grover Cleveland (1837–1908) served his second, non-consecutive term as the twenty-fourth president of the United States from 1893 to 1897, making him the only person in U.S. history to serve two non-consecutive presidential terms. His second term was dominated by the Panic of 1893, a severe economic depression that Cleveland addressed by repealing the Sherman Silver Purchase Act and defending the gold standard, measures that deepened his conflict with the populist wing of his own Democratic Party. His handling of the Pullman Strike in 1894, in which he deployed federal troops over the objection of the Illinois governor, further divided the party.
