Grover Cleveland (1837–1908) was the twenty-second president of the United States, serving his first term from 1885 to 1889 as the first Democrat elected to the presidency since before the Civil War. He was known for vetoing large numbers of congressional bills, including private pension claims and what he viewed as spending that exceeded the government's legitimate role. He lost his bid for a second consecutive term to Benjamin Harrison in 1888 despite winning the popular vote — making him the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms (he would return as the twenty-fourth president).
