George Washington (1732–1799) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797, and the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. As president he set enduring precedents for the office — among them the peaceful transfer of power and a voluntary two-term limit that held until the 1940s. He presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention and is often called the "Father of His Country."
